Plumbing - Burst Pipes
Required Tools: Trimming Knife, Spanner, Hose, Straight Coupling, Hacksaw, Hose Clips
Use this method for a split less than 3 inches in a stright copper pipe.
- Using a simple hacksaw, cut off the damaged section of pipe.
- Using a slip coupling, slide the end of the coupling onto the end of the pipe. Make sure there is no pipe stop. Attach to other pipe end.
- Next, unscrew the compression nuts on the slip coupling, sliding the nuts and olives at either end along the pipe. Apply some pipe joining compound and wait to set. refit the nuts and olives, screwing tight with your fingers first then using a spanner.
Alternatively, for a quick, temporary fix to other types of piping or damage to curved pipes;
- Use a utility knife to cut a length of hose long enough to cover the damaged section of piping. Add an extra 1 or 2 inches of hose to each end of the length. Cut the hose from end to end.
- Fix the hose around the pipe. If the hose is too small and the edges do not meet make sure that the damaged section is covered first.
- Using hose clips and wire loops, fasten the hose tightly around the damaged pipe.
- Eventually the whole section of pipe will need replacing by a plumber.
