Plumbing - Toilet - Cleaning the ball valve
Required Tools: Screwdriver
![]() |
- If the ball valve is not functioning properly it may need to be cleaned or replaced. A valve that does not close properly will have a constant overflow from the overflow pipe, wasting water. One that doesn’t open fully means the cistern will be slow to fill, which can cause airlocks in supply pipes.
- Stop the water supply to the cistern. Unscrew the valve at the end closest to the float arm. Remove the float and arm. Remove the diaphragm from inside the valve, you may need to use a screwdriver.
- Clean the diaphragm in warm soapy water and use a clean cloth to remove dirt from inside the valve.
- Turn on the water before reassembly to flush out any debris in the valve.
- Reassemble the valve.
