Plumbing - Toilet - Dealing with blockages
Required Tools: Bucket, Plunger
- If you flush your toilet and the water level rises and is slow to clear from the pan, you may have a blockage in the trap.
- First try getting a bucket of water and pouring it as fast as possible into the toilet to try and dislodge the blockage. Try getting a bit of extra power by standing on a chair over the toilet and pouring the water form an elevated position. Try this a few times and will clear most blockages.
- If the water level gets too high, remove with a container or siphon off by using a piece of rubber piping. Fill the tube with water and seal at both ends with your thumbs. Place one end under the water in the pan and release your thumbs holding the other end of the pipe over a bucket. The water will run freely out of the toilet into the bucket.
- If the blockage remains, try using a plunger. Try to use one with an all plastic cup, as ones with a metal disc may damage the pan. Insert the plunger into the pan and move up and down vigorously. The suction created should shift the blockage.
- If all fails there are chemical drain cleaners and other products available. These must be used with caution however and will take a while to work.
