Plumbing - Heating - Fixing a dripping radiator
- Ensure the leak is coming from the radiator.
- Place a pot under the leak to catch any water. Stop water entering the radiator by switching off the valves at both ends. Loosen the nut between the radiator and the feeder pipe (the union nut) with a spanner. It is wise to hold the feeder pipe in place with another spanner to prevent it from bending.
- When the nut comes loose water will start dripping. Use the bleeder key to open the bleeder valve at the top side of the radiator. Water will be pushed quickly out of the radiator as air enters through the bleeder valve so be ready with a bucket and towels. Drain the radiator completely.
- Remove the union valve completely from the radiator. Clean of any old tape or gunk around its seal. Coil new PTEF tape around the thread about 20 times, working it into the valves thread as you go. Screw the union valve back into place and reattach the feeder pipe. Be careful not to over tighten.
- Allow water to fill up into the system by leaving the bleeder valve open. Once full seal the bleeder valve. Check the valve for any drips after you have finished. If the leak is still there you may have to replace the valve completely or seek professional help.
