Storage - Fixing Hooks and Brackets
There are three steps to fitting hooks and brackets to add extra storage, follow our simple hints and you can't go wrong;
- Choose the correct fixing for the wall; For fixing onto the back of doors use a wood screw. For real wood doors you should also drill a pilot hole to prevent splitting of the wood. Make sure that the screw is not too long and won't go through the door. For plasterboard walls, you can either use a stud detector to locate the wood behind the wall and fix into that, or use a special hollow wall fixing - either a spring toggle or self-drive spiral fixing. For brick walls you will need to drill a hole and use a masonry fitting.
- Measure the place you want the hook to go - multiple measurements and checks on placement will minimise the damage you cause to your walls. Make sure there is enough space between the walls, other fittings and floors for the item you wish to store. If there are multiple screws for a single hook, make use of a spirit level to ensure that it will be on the wall straight.
- Firmly but gently fix the hook. Some materials and walls are more fragile than others. If you are using a drill make sure you use the lowest power level. Make sure you don't overtighten or strip screw heads.
