Repairs - Fixing Loose Banisters
Required Tools: Drill, Claw Hammer, Nails
- This is usually caused when a nail holding the baluster to the handrail has come loose or fallen out. If the nail is still present remove it if possible. If not, hammer in a new nail at a new position.
- Use a thicker, slightly longer nail to replace the previous nail. Hammer in diagonally up through the top of the baluster into the handrail. If the baluster is very thin, you may need to drill small pilot holes.
- Some balusters are fitted in place with small, thin pieces of wood, called fillets, in between the balusters attached to the handrail. If these come loose you can nail them back in with a slightly thicker nail. If the fillet is broken or lost, cut a piece of wood to size and nail into the handrail. You may wish to use another intact fillet as a guide. A nail punch may make it easier to hammer the nails flush with the fillet.
- When fixing the banisters don’t use glue as this will make it difficult to remove balusters should you need to in the future.
