Flooring - Removing square edged boards

More Articles

Required Tools: Drill, Claw Hammer, Compass Saw

  • Use a drill to make a small starting hole just before the board meets a joist. You can identify joists by a line of nails. Make the hole near the edge of the board and big enough to insert a padsaw.
  • Cut across the width of the board. Repeat this process at the other end of the board at the next joist so that the board is no longer attached to any joists.
  • Start at one end of the board and insert a bolster chisel under the edge, levering upwards to prise out the fixing nails and lift up the board.
  • Use a hammer to wedge a larger gap with which to work. Try to push the hammer as far as possible from the loose edge. Push down on the exposed hammer levering the board and at the same time loosening more nails further along the length.
  • Once loosened enough, pass the full length of the hammer through to the other end of the board. Push down on the starting end, loosening more nails until the board is free. Keep moving the hammer as far down as possible to gain better leverage.

This is OK for the old fashioned T&G glued laminate, but most is now supplied as 'click' together sections. The problem is that you have to handle a section the whole length of the room so that the ends are already joined as they will not join to each other at a shallow angle. If you work alone like me, this can be difficult (but not impossible) on rooms using 5 lengths of laminate of more. In the past, on longer floors, I have shaved the upper lip off the end joiner, so that I can slide the section horizontally and join it with a dab of glue to the next section. Anyone have a better method?
