Decorating - Hanging Wallpaper - Hanging the Paper

Required Tools: Ladder, Workbench, Tape Measure, Wallpaper Paste, Paperhanging Brush, Seam Roller

  • The first length of paper should be hung on the wall adjacent to the room’s window. In rooms with multiple windows selected the largest one and work from this. Work away from the source of light. This will mean any slight overlaps will not be as visible as there is less shadow cast. Work in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction around the room according to preference.
  • Mark your starting point on the wall by measuring the width of the wallpaper minus 1/2 an inch from the window. This allows for some overlap of paper on the adjoining wall. Use a plumb line at this point to draw a vertical line up the wall. This will be the guide to keep you paper perfectly straight up the wall.
  • Unfold the top half of the pasted paper when ready to hang. Leave a little extra paper (2 inches or so) above the top of the wall. Hold the pasted side firmly against the wall and align the paper carefully with your pencil mark.
  • Press with your hand or use a paperhanging brush to attach the top of the paper to the wall. Smooth the upper part of the paper against the wall with your brush using diagonal strokes from the centre of the paper.
  • Now gently let the lower fold of paper down. Brush the centre of the paper against the wall and then brush the edges out from the centre. Ensure no bubbles remain under the paper. If present brush out gently to the edges
  • When the paper is in place trim off excess paper at the top and bottom of the length with a trimming knife and guide. Alternatively run the back of a pair of scissors across the paper where it meets the skirting board or ceiling to leave a definite crease. Then lift up the paper from the wall and cut along the crease with your scissors.
  • To hang the next lengths follow the same procedure but using the first piece as a guide rather than your pencilled line. Match the top part of your length to the previous piece creating a butt joint between them, and then run your hand up to the corner away from the first length, attaching it to the wall. Then continue as previously making sure the edges match down the entire length.
  • After a few pieces have been hung you may wish to flatten the join between lengths with a seam roller. Be careful not to apply too much pressure which may leave indentations in your paper.
