Electrical - Installing a New Light Fitting

More Articles

Required Tools: Screwdriver, Screws, Wire Strippers

  • Warning : When working with electrics, always ensure that the circuit you are working on is turned off at the fusebox. Electricity is dangerous, and you should only work with your houses wiring if you know what precautions to take.
  • Turn off the power to the light fitting. Remove the old bulb and shade. Unscrew the ceiling rose cover and slide it down the flex.
  • Note how all the wires are connected up. Disconnect the wires from the flex, and remove the flex and lamp holder.
  • Disconnect the individual wires from the power cable and straighten them.
  • Unscrew the ceiling rose from the ceiling and pull over the power cable to remove.
  • If the mounting holes are significantly different in the new rose, it may not attach properly. If they are different rotate the new rose to avoid the old roses attachment holes.
  • Cut back the power cable if it is in bad condition. Thread the power cable through the new rose and secure the rose to the ceiling with screws.
  • Attach the power cable wires to their corresponding terminals in the new rose.
  • Replace the lamp holder at the end of the flex if necessary before reattaching the flex to the rose.
  • Thread the flex through the rose cover and secure the wires at the corresponding terminals. Push the rose cover up the flex and screw onto the ceiling rose.
  • Fit the shade and bulb and test the light works.
