Decorating - Mildew on painted walls
Required Tools: Paintbrush, Eye Protection, Rubber Gloves, Scrubbing Brush, Fungicide
- High humidity and heat can lead to mildew build up on walls. Simply painting over it will lead to a reoccurrence of the problem as the mildew grows through the new paint.
- Clean the mildew from the painted surface using a solution of soap or detergent and water. Scrub the area thoroughly with a scrubbing brush. Rinse the area with clean water and leave to dry.
- Treat the wall with a fungicide, diluted as instructed by the manufacturer’s instructions. Wear gloves and goggles when using fungicide. Use a brush to paint on two or three coats of the fungicide.
- Paint the wall using a fungicidal paint.
- To prevent the problem reoccurring, make sure ventilation is improved in the area and any slight leaks or sweating pipes near the affected area are dealt with.
