Painting - Paint effects
Required Tools: Paintbrush, Paint, Paint Tray, Sponge
You can achieve several effects with paint to add interest and texture to plain walls. These methods are also useful for covering imperfections in walls. All these effects should be applied over a wall already painted with a base coat. Glazed effects are best applied over a eggshell or silk finish paint.
- Colourwashing : creates a quick and easy textured effect. Mix water based paint with water in a roughly 1:5 proportion and rub the paint into to small areas at time using a decorators sponge.
- Ragging : create a subtly texture surface with interesting folds and waves. Mix water based paint with water in any proportion depending on the depth of colour you require. Soak a rag or cloth in the paint and the scrunch it up, and then dab onto the walls.
- Stippling : Creates a fine, subtly shaded effect. Create a glazed paint by mixing acrylic glaze and emulsion paint in a 4:1 ratio. Apply the glaze roughly to the wall, you do not need to coat it completely. While the glaze is still wet, dab at it using a stiff-bristled brush or a special stippling brush to create the desired effect.
- Dragging : Creates fine-grained vertical or horizontal stripes. Create a glazed paint by mixing acrylic glaze and emulsion paint in a 4:1 ratio. Paint a small section of the wall with a roller or brush, and then immediately drag a long-haired brush dipped in a small amount of glaze all the way down or along the wall, removing some of the paint.
