Decorating - Hanging Wallpaper - Preparing the Paper
Required Tools: Bucket, Workbench, String, Tape Measure, Wallpaper Paste
- Prepare paste as instructed on the packet.
- Measure the wall height at a number of locations in the room from ceiling to the top of the skirting board and use the maximum height, plus about an extra 4 inches, to measure the amount of paper required. Draw a line on the paste side at the predetermined length in pencil. Cut along this line. Now you can use this sheet as a template for the next sheets. If the paper is patterned match the pattern on each sheet before cutting. This will result in some paper waste, so ensure you have enough paper to complete the job. Number each sheet on the back as you cut them to ensure you are hanging them in the correct order. Ensure you mark which end of the sheet is intended to be at the top before hanging.
- Place your paper over a suitable table for pasting. Place the paper so that most of it is hanging off the right of the table (or left if you are left handed). Align the papers edge with the edge of the table. If, when pasting, any paste gets onto the table, wipe off with a damp cloth. It may be beneficial to add some food colouring to the paste to make it easier to see where the paste is too thin or thick on the paper.
- Tie a piece of string across the top of your paste bucket this will enable you to keep your brush clean between pasting and to wipe off any excess paste. Load your paste brush with paste, removing any excess on the string. Brush the paper down the centre on the paste side of the paper, then brush from the centre out to the edges. Ensure all edges have been covered and the paste is evenly spread, making sure it is not too thick.
- Fold the pasted area over on itself without creasing the paper, leaving the paste inside the fold. Continue pasting until the entire length is covered. Now fold the paper over top end to bottom end and leave the paste to soak as long as the manufacturer advises, this will differ for different weights of paper. Ensure each length is left for the same amount of time as they will stretch and expand while soaking. This is especially important for patterned paper.
