Outdoor - Repairing a Leaking Gutter Joint
Required Tools: Ladder, Hand Chisel, Claw Hammer
- In plastic gutters check the union piece that connects two gutter lengths. Squeeze the sides of the gutter piece to remove it from the union piece.
- Remove the rubber watertight seals from inside the union piece. Clean them thoroughly to remove any dirt then replace.
- Reconnect the guttering. If this does not solve the problem the watertight seals may need replaced.
- In metal gutters the job is more complex. Remove the nut and bolt holding the joint together.
- Gently separate the joint with a hammer. Chisel away any old putty or rust from the joint connection and remove any debris.
- Apply metal primer to the gutter ends and joint attachment and leave to dry. Spread gutter sealant over the joint pieces and replace the gutter pieces. Bolt the joint back into place.
