Decorating - Repairing a Patch of Damaged Plaster
Required Tools: Paintbrush, Hand Chisel, Claw Hammer, Plasterers trowel, Filler
- Remove any loose plaster at the site of damage with a hammer and chisel until there is firm surface under the damaged area. Brush away any dust. Dampen the exposed area with water so the wall doesn’t suck out all of the moisture from the plaster.
- Mix the undercoat plaster and begin to fill the damaged area quickly after preparation. Pack enough plaster onto a plasterers trowel to fill the hole.
- Holding the trowel at an angle to the wall, sweep the plaster up the wall pushing it to the wall. Don’t push the plaster flat against the wall or it will come away when you remove the trowel.
- It may be necessary to build up the gap with thin layers. Allow each layer to half dry until stiff before applying subsequent layers. Leave about 1/8 inch from the surface for the finishing plaster.
- Rest a length of wood on the firm surface either side of the gap. Draw the wood over the top of the plaster to remove any high points.
- Allow the plaster to dry (usually about 2 hours). Protect any surrounding furniture and floor from splashes. Mix and apply the finishing plaster as a final layer.
- Allow to dry until stiff. Use a water spray to dampen the surface and use a plasterers trowel to smooth off the surface.
