Decorating - Repairing Flaking Paint

More Articles

Required Tools: Sandpaper, Paint, Undercoat Paint/Primer, Filler, Stripping Knife

  • Flaking paint is caused by moisture build up behind paint. The moisture dries as it is absorbed into the wall or dried by sun. During this process the painted surface expands and contracts, separating it from the wall causing the flaking.
  • You must locate the source of moisture. Check for any pipe leaks. Deal with the source of moisture before you begin repairing the wall. Use a plastic scraper to remove as much flaking paint as possible. Sand the effected area plus an extra few inches around the effected area.
  • Sand down to the underlying wall. Prime the exposed area with a suitable good quality undercoat.
  • If there are any holes or cracks in the wall these will need to be filled. Once the filler is dried, apply one or two coats of good quality paint.
