Flooring - Sanding Floorboards
Required Tools: Eye Protection, Respirator, Claw Hammer, Varnish, Drum Sander
- Prepare the floor by removing or hammering in any old nails, and repairing or replacing boards that are damaged.
- Floorboard sanding will generate considerable amounts of dust. Make sure that you protect yourself from the dust by wearing a dust mask and suitable eye protection. You will want to ensure that dust cannot enter other areas of the house by sealing any doors with masking tape.
- Rent an industrial drum sander, fit a coarse sandpaper and remove all varnish by running the sander diagonally across the boards. This will help level any slight differences between the heights of your floorboards.
- To finish the boards, replace the coarse sandpaper with a finer grade and sand along the grain of the floorboards.
- Corners and edges that the drum sander cannot reach can be completed by hand, or preferably with the use of a rotary power sander. After this step you should remove any traces of sawdust to provide a clean surface for varnishing.
- Reseal the floorboards using a hard-wearing clear or stained varnish by painting along the grain of the wood. You should apply several coats, between each coat you should inspect the surface to ensure that no fluff or dust has adhered.
