Painting - Wood Surfaces
Required Tools: Paintbrush, Sandpaper, Paint, Undercoat Paint/Primer
- Brush a coat of knotting over all knots and imperfections in the wood like resinous areas, to seal them and prevent these area from discolouring the paint.
- Next, evenly apply a coat of primer and leave to dry. This will seal the pores of the absorbent surface and form a layer to which all other coats will grip. You can use either an all purpose primer or buy one which is specific to your surface type.
- Once the coat is dry take a piece of fine abrasive paper and wrap around a small block of wood. Rub gently over the primed sections removing all rough spots and moulded areas on the surface.
- Apply one layer of undercoat. For slightly darker patches apply two coats. Always use an undercoat which matches the clour of the paint you are using for the topcoat.
- As in step 3, wait until the undercoat is dry and then gently rub over the surface with abrasive paper, smoothing out any rough bits.
- Next use a dusting brush to remove any tiny bits of dust left from the prevoius step. Also you can use a lint free cloth to wipe the surface to remove any bits of dust. Finally apply the topcoat. For wood surfaces, gloss paint tends to better paint to use as it is easy to clean and very durable.
